Abstract

Enterovirus is a very common viral agent found from summer to fall, in infants and children. In most children, clinical manifestations are mild febrile illness or aseptic meningitis, but perinatal infection can cause fatal illness such as hepatitis and myocarditis in the newborn. We experienced a case of severe echovirus 30 infection in a premature infant who was delivered from a mother with mild febrile illness. The neonate presented with sudden apnea, lethargy at 3 days after birth, and manifestated intraventricular hemorrhage, hepatic failure with coagulopathy, myocarditis, pleural effusion, pericardial effusion, and cardiac tamponade. He was treated with intravenous immunoglobulin, fresh frozen plasma, tube thoracostomy and pericardiocentesis. We reported this case with a brief review of the literatures.
