Three Cases of Melanosis Coli associated with Dongkuizi Tea Consumption and Colon Cancer

Abstract

Melanosis coli has been considered as a harmless pigmentation of colon associated with the use of laxatives containing anthraquinone. The compositional nature of pigment of melanosis coli is unknown, but histochemical studies suggested that this pigment has certain similarities with lipofuscin. Recently, several studies have provided some evidences of possible association between melanosis coli and colorectal neoplasm. We experienced 3 cases of melanosis coli. Two of these cases are associated with consumption of Dongkuizi tea and 1 case is associated with colon cancer and tubular adenoma.
