An Outbreak of Hepatitis A in Taejeon City

Abstract

BACKGROUND/AIMS: We carried out this study to investigate an outbreak of hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection which occurred in Taejeon from the end of July to early September, 1996.
METHODS
Clinical records of 68 cases of acute hepatitis A which were diagnosed at Chungnam National University Hospital between November, 1995 to October, 1997 were reviewed retrospectively.
RESULTS
All 68 patients lived in Taejeon. The outbreak of 35 cases occurred in Doma-Dong and Byun-Dong, Seo-Gu of Taejeon during three months period (from July to September, 1996). It was suspected that this outbreak was originated from a common source, an underground spring located in Doma-Dong. Moreover, the remaining 29 sporadic cases occurred in other areas throughout the year. All patients have recovered completely without complications.
CONCLUSIONS
We report the outbreak of HAV infection occurred in the Seo-Gu area of Taejeon between July and September, 1996.
